Interview:
Introduce yourself…
I’m Cameron Mason, Chester FC goalkeeper, I’ve been in non league now for around 10 years, mainly in the National League North, Love all sport and play multiple threw out the year as much as I can.
What are your specific qualities as a goalkeeper?
Think my main quality’s now I’m a little older are organisation/Basics, Ball playing goalkeeper, who much prefers playing out but happy to go long when needed. With experience I think you learn you need every tool in the bag.
You played at Oldham Athletic FC in your youth. How did you experience Oldham’s youth training programme?
Oldham was good, my local club with some great people, really enjoyed my time there, unfortunately for me I joined an environment where people had been there a lot longer than me and they already had there foot in the door.
You made the switch from Oldham to Chesterfield FC under-18. Were there any differences between those clubs that you noticed immediately?
When I went to Chesterfield it was a full time environment, so straight away that’s a big difference getting goalkeeper coaching everyday and plenty of games which helped me massively. I was the only fit keeper in my first year at the club for the youth team, and was the only keeper in my second year as well so had a lot of game time.
From November 2013 to January 2014, you were on loan from Chesterfield to Southport FC. How did you experience this period?
I actually only went on loan for 1 game it was Luton away, they needed cover on the bench that night and I was heading back up north with the first team from a game, and they dropped me off at where the Southport bus had stopped and I then jumped on there and traveled all the way back down south for the Luton game, I remember Southport lost the game and McNulty the centre back scored a chest Volley that I’ll never forget. My first taste of non league.

In the same season, Chesterfield FC became champions of the EFL League Two. Did you also personally experience this championship?
I had left before they lifted the trophy but was around enough before I left to realise they where going to do it, fully deserved and a great achievement, I spent a lot of that season out on loan at Long Eaton United, who we played in a cup game and there keeper sadly got injured so I went there to cover for them.
From 2014 to 2021, you played for Curzon Ashton FC. What are your most important memories of Curzon?
Yeah, I enjoyed my time at Curzon, great club, actually signed as a striker after some trial sessions to try and get my love for football back, clearly worked as I’m still playing now. After a few weeks admitted I was a goalkeeper and got the gloves back on. We had a great FA Cup run, promotions and becoming number 1 at a young age in the National League North was something I’m proud of and forever grateful for the opportunity.
You made the transfer to Southport FC in July 2021. For Southport, this was the second time you signed here. Did the club immediately feel like home?
Yeah was nice going back there, felt like I had some form of connection, some of the board etc remembered the Luton game and sorting my kit/number out in a rush for the game. It’s a club I enjoyed my time at, had some of my best games while I was there with some great lads and staff. Great memories.
You have played at several football clubs. At which club did you learn the most and from who?
Probably Chesterfield, I had 2 great keeper coaches in Mark Crossley and then Eric Nixon, I actually lived with Eric for a while due to problems with digs. He helped me a lot not only on the pitch but off it as well. The other keepers at the club, Tommy Lee, Richard O’Donnell and Aaron Chapman where all great with me as well, gave me unbelievable advice and helped me improve everyday rather than leave me to my own devices.
Currently, you are the first goalkeeper for Chester FC. What are your personal goals this season?
The aim for me is now to get back playing after 11 weeks out with a ankle injury, as a team it’s to get promoted, this is a tough league we know that but we believe we have what it takes we just need to implement that on the pitch and keep giving our all to see where it takes us. Leagues ain’t won after the first couple of months so we are focussed and ready for the challenges ahead.
