🎙️ INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
I’m Emlyn Lewis, a centre-half and current captain of Weston-Super-Mare in the National League South. Before joining Weston, I spent ten years at Cardiff Met, where I was fortunate to be part of a side that won the Nathaniel MG Cup and played in the Europa League qualifiers. I’ve also represented Wales C, earning four caps and having the honour of captaining the side.
Can you tell us about the first grassroots club you played for, and how those early experiences shaped your passion for the game?
As a youngster I started out at my local club, Aberaeron FC, before joining Aberystwyth Town’s academy and then moving on to Penrhyncoch at 17. Those experiences were massive in shaping me, not just as a player but as a person. Playing men’s football at Penrhyncoch toughened me up and gave me that edge you need to step forward in the game. I was lucky to have people like Gari Lewis and Aneurin Thomas (Freddie) around me at that stage, who had a big influence on my development.
How would you describe your style as a centre-back—are you more positional, physical, or something else?
It’s difficult to put into one box. I enjoy the physical side of the game, but I also back myself to read situations and organise well. I feel like I’ve matured a lot in recent years, and that’s really improved my overall game and consistency.
You earned four caps and captained Wales C twice. What did that leadership experience teach you?
It was a huge honour and one of the proudest moments of my career. Representing your country is always special, but to lead the team out as captain was unforgettable. It taught me about responsibility and about leading by example, but, in truth, it was made easy by the quality of the squads I was part of.
