🎙️ INTERVIEW
1. Introduce yourself…
Hello my name is Ciaran Mullan, I’m 18 years old and I play for Derry City football club.
If you weren’t a footballer, what do you think you’d be doing right now?
If I wasn’t a footballer, I would be studying something along the lines of sport as a career.
Who were your biggest influences as a kid (family, coaches, role models)?
My biggest influence as a kid was definitely family. My 2 older brothers played football and I always looked up to them, trying to be like them.
You’re primarily a right-back but also have experience at centre-back and left-back. Which position do you prefer, and why?
When I was younger I always played centre back but in recent years I have found myself playing right back and enjoying it more. I like to get on the ball and play higher up on the pitch that’s why I prefer right back.
How do you mentally prepare for big games or when competing for your spot on the team?
I mentally prepare myself by listening to music. I always listen to music before games.
Ciaran, how did your time at Trojans (2010-2022) prepare you for more competitive football?
My time at Trojans was amazing, from a young age I learnt lots of skills which followed me when I was older. Playing for Trojans prepared me for competitive football as we always challenged for the league and cup every year.
Also playing against strong clubs like Linfield game me a lots of experience playing against talents players.
You later joined Don Boscos (2022–2024). How did that move come about, and what did you gain from it?
Joining Don Boscos was very important to me as at the time they were very strong playing in the National League regularly. I developed a lot there and they taught me many qualities which has made me a better player. They gave me lots of opportunities which I am very grateful for.
How did the initial contact with Derry City come about, and what was your first reaction?
I first heard about Derry when I was playing in the Foyle cup. I had a great campaign. Don Boscos always won the 5 trophies that year and I am grateful that I won D&D player of the year. After this I heard about training for Derry and I was very happy, this was the next step in my football career and I wanted to make it count.

Do you remember the moment you officially signed? What did it feel like for you and your family?
When I officially signed for the academy I was buzzing it was an amazing feeling and I settled in well. My family and I were over the moon as my brother also played in the academy before, he gave me lots of advice to help me prepare for the season.
What was your first training session at Derry City like compared to youth football at Don Boscos?
My first session with Derry easy very good. It was tonight and I could see so many talented players alongside me. There wasn’t much of a difference at first between the session of Don Boscos and Derry. I was always challenged at Boscos and the same happened at Derry.
Where do you see yourself in 3–5 years? Do you have aspirations to play abroad, in other leagues?
I see myself hopefully playing either in Ireland, America or England in the next 3-5 years. I always wanted to travel the world, hopefully my footballing ability can prove me with this dream. I was also looking into the possibility of a scholarship in America as this would be great to help my knowledge but also my footballing experience and career.
