🎙️ INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
I’m Jade McLaren a Scottish professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Montrose WFC in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
How did your football journey begin, and what first inspired you to play the game?
As far as I can remember and from what my mums said, Iv been kicking a ball since I could walk, growing up I was always the only girl who played football at school and from there got a team made for me n the love for football just grew and grew.
What was it like coming through the youth setup at Forfar Farmington LFC?
Best time of my life, we had a really good group I grew up with playing and soon as I turned 15 I was called into the women’s team and some of the players there at the time like Nicky Grant, Nicola Davidson and Fiona Mcnicoll looked after me and taught me a lot!
How did the move to Dundee United FC Women come about?
I literally went to a game to watch my friends playing and I knew gavin beith from regionals and things growing up and I didn’t have a team as I stopped playing for a bit due to illness and just carried on from there!
What emotions did you feel making your first major transfer as a player?
When I moved from youth into the Forfar first team was a lot of fear as I knew I was the youngest by a good amount of years but I always loved a challenge at the same time so It was exciting.
How would you describe the culture and environment at Montrose WFC?
There’s a real togetherness about us, we’re all good friends at and away from football and we’ve had a good core group for couple seasons now and I think even the ones that joined in this year have just slotted into the group. We work hard for one another and I think that shows on the pitch.

What has been your favourite moment so far in a Montrose shirt?
Definitely the last day of the season 24/25, waiting to hear if we had done enough to stay up feeling was surreal!
How have you seen women’s football in Scotland change since you started playing?
The structure and the facilities are a lot better and the leagues are a lot more competitive however controversially I feel there is a big jump between even 6th place and 5th place in SWPL alll due to money and I wish there was a way it could be more evenly spread.
What advice would you give to young girls dreaming of playing at senior level?
Stick in, work hard, take on advice from senior players and I learnt a lot from what I know from players gone before me.
What personal goals have you set for yourself at Montrose WFC?
It was to score more goals than last year, so far not gone to plan but still plenty more games to go from now until end of season!
