🎙️ INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
Hi all, for those that don’t know, I’m Robbie. A 29 year old semi-pro Midfielder with Stirling Albion. When I’m not at the part time gig of football you’ll more than likely find me in OWNNIT which is a gym I co-own with one of my best friends, Liam. As the full time career would suggest – Fitness plays a huge role in my life, it’s all I’ve really done since the age of 20 after being released from full time football.
Unlike the gym-bro stereotype, I don’t let it totally consume my life. Out with the gym I do enjoy ticking off Munros when I get the chance alongside making the most of the limited free time at weekends. (Yes, I’m aware that’s still a form of exercise but it’s more for the mental wellbeing and recharging purposes for me).
Over recent years I’ve put this love for fitness into a career and also started giving back a little with fundraising for Scottish Huntington’s Disease, one that has hit close to home and something I have tested positive which may pose it’s problems later in life…I’m doing my best to prevent that!
How would you describe yourself as a player, and what are your strongest qualities as a midfielder?
As a player I could be described as a combative midfielder, I prefer that term to the widely used “Dog” that has been given to me by friends over the years! But the more experienced I’ve became I believe I’ve started to offer a lot more than the defensive side of the game.
You started your football career in the Falkirk FC’s youth academy. How did you end up in the academy?
Like most kids years ago, you play with your local boys club and when your team is doing well it only attracts the attention of the Pro-Youth system. Central Rio was my boys club where I remember playing the most. As the name suggests we we’re inspired by the Brazilian’s and had the class yellow, white & blue kit to go with it – loved it! From there it was Falkirk from the age of 12 to 19 and admittedly just wasn’t good enough to remain a full time player and compete with those on my level or above.
Your time at Linlithgow Rose gave you exposure to a different style of football. How did that move shape you as a midfielder?
It was an eye opening season, I thought it would be some walk in the park as it was what I considered at the time, a low level of football – how wrong was I. We found ourselves in a near relegation battle and had 4 different managers in 1 season, it was crazy. It taught me a lot about senior football and to this day am thankful I spent the time there that I did. I spent most of the season at Right back but always played better in Midfield, but there was some excellent senior players in our team at the time so opportunities were limited. I never got offered a new contract at the end of that season and thought football was done for me.
