INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
My Name is Bright Siaw, I am 18 years old and I play for Barnet Football Club as Wingback / Winger.
You joined Barnet’s Academy at a young age — what first brought you to the club, and what made you believe it was the right environment to grow as a player?
What attracted me most was seeing how they gave out opportunities to young players and the fact that our academy 19s manager was the assistant coach for the first team I knew it would be a good opportunity to come show what I can do as there is a direct link between the first team and academy.
Can you tell us about a memorable Academy match or moment that made you realise you could play at professional level?
To be honest there wasn’t a memorable match that specifically made me feel like I could play at the professional level however moments such as having a MOTM performance in the FA Youth Cup and in the Middlesex Senior Cup last year gave me a lot of confidence and evidence I could be onto something if I carry on working hard.
Barnet has a strong tradition of developing young talent. What did it mean to you personally to sign your first professional contract here?
For me it was a dream come true, I’ve wanted to be a professional footballer for as long as I can remember and to do it at a club that has a good reputation for developing young talent is even better.
Your loan to Welling United was a big step — how did it feel walking into a senior dressing room for the first time?
To be fair alongside playing for Barnet 19s last season I was playing regular men’s football at Burnham FC so I had some prior experience of what a men’s dressing room is like but the dressing room was good the lads welcomed me in nicely.
What were the biggest differences you noticed between Academy football and National League South football?
Tempo of the game was a lot quicker, overall quality and decision making was alot better also and it goes without saying but the physicality is a lot different than academy football.
Can you describe your debut at Welling? What stands out when you look back on that first game?
My debut for Welling I was pleased with I came on and made an impact and caused chaos for their defenders so I was happy with my performance.

Many young players say their first loan teaches them a lot about the realities of senior football — what did you learn most from that spell?
For me I learnt that you have to stay present during games you can’t mentally switch off because as soon as you do the opposition will capitalise on that and in most cases punish you.
Did that experience change how you see your role on the pitch or in the squad?
Not really I wasn’t there long enough for me to feel jet changed how I see my role in the squad but hopefully with another loan I can get some games under my belt and become more experienced which will obviously open more opportunities for me to be more involved with the squad.
How do you plan to continue evolving as a player and contribute to the team’s success in upcoming seasons?
I plan to carry on working hard, taking it day by day and get a good streak of games going to I can build some momentum and run with it, hopefully I can be involved with the first team a lot more and contribute to their successes.
