INTERVIEW

Introduce yourself…

My name is Cammy Gill. I was born in 1998 and currently play as a goalkeeper for Montrose FC.

Do you see yourself as more of a shot-stopper, a commanding presence, or a goalkeeper who likes to play out from the back?

Probably see myself as more shot stopper and more a simple consistency GK rather than a flare player or trying anything fancy.

You joined Dunfermline Athletic FC at a young age. Looking back, what are your earliest memories of the club?

I had loads of memories from Dunfermline, had some great coaches & moments, I was there for so long that it’s hard to select a few but probably signing my first professional contract has to be up there & also making my pro debut in the Scottish cup.

What surprised you most when you started training with the first team?

You realise how high the standards have to be every session. There’s no hiding place, especially as a GK & you need to get used to other players having a go at you for mistakes/realise that it’s not personal and they want to win.

You joined Arbroath on loan in January 2017 before being recalled by Dunfermline Athletic due to an injury situation within the squad. How valuable was that experience for you at a young age, both in terms of adapting to a different dressing room and developing in a new environment?

I loved it, although it was a proper short stint that was my first time going into a completely new changing room & was an experience that really helped me. Actually helped me with other moves in my career from contacts I made there in such a short space of time.

After leaving Dunfermline in 2021, following so many years at the club, it must have been a significant decision. How difficult was it for you to make that move?

It was an easy decision in the end to leave to be fair as I wasn’t really getting a breakthrough, I knew if I wanted to play I’d have to leave & that was basically the decision made. I’d have love to stay there but without the game time it doesn’t make sense.

How important was regular first-team football at Cowdenbeath for your development?

Cowden was a really tough season & devastating to get relegated. Not something I ever wanna go through again. But also one that I gained huge amounts of experience from and getting a full season of playing under my belt was crucial for me.

What was your reaction when Arbroath FC approached you again? And how valuable was the Championship experience for your career?

I was buzzing to be back working with the Campbell’s again which was massive. I enjoyed the camaraderie about the team that season too and was good to get back up the leagues a bit, obviously limited game time there but still a great experience in a different way from Cowden.

In 2023, you joined Montrose FC. What factors influenced your decision to make the move, and what made Montrose the right next step in your career at that time?

It was Disck Campbell who asked if I’d go to Montrose as a space had opened up with their GK department. Since then I haven’t looked back and loved my time there. Again a club where they had a really good core group of players and a great dressing room so when I heard about moving across to the Mo I was buzzing for it.

What message would you like to give Montrose supporters?

We really appreciate the Mo supporters, it’s a great club, proper family club from the top down & a privilege to be a part of it!
