🎙️ INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
Megan Hornby, forward at Portsmouth FC Women.
What first drew you to football, and why did you choose to pursue it as a career?
Like many young girls I just started playing for my local team, not really with the intention to pursue it as a career however I was lucky enough for it to happen.
As a forward, what do you consider your greatest strengths and conversely, what aspects are you actively working to improve?
As a top line player I think my crossing and 1v1 are up there as they are key aspects of my role but as you’ve touched on I’ve got a couple thing I’d like to be better as such as finishing chances and assisting others.
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a match, especially high-pressure games?
I think it’s really important to keep a routine that building up to a game, eating right before is a must and I often head to the gym to stretch and get a few extras in.
Can you tell us about your earliest experiences in football and what your youth development looked like?
I was involved in Sunday league football til around 18 which some people consider quite late however I think this meant that I could just enjoy football a bit more without the pressure that comes with professional sport.
What was the most important lesson you learned during your youth academy years?
The most important lesson was your never too old to learn something, I think when I was younger I really thought I knew it all but joining new teams and meeting new coaches I realized there’s so much more to learn.
When you joined Portsmouth FC Women, what made you feel it was the right environment for your next step?
I think it started with Jay the manager, a lot of the early talks was about the culture and environment in Portsmouth and I felt that from the first moment I arrived, the people was so welcoming and the environment for me to develop was there.
What do you believe you bring to Portsmouth FC Women — on the pitch and in the locker room — that makes you a valuable asset for the club?
I’d like to think a bring an energy up top with a strong work rate and goals but I also thing I bring experience from my previous clubs which my team can learn from.
How do you see your role evolving at Portsmouth, and how would you like to contribute to the club’s ambitions going forward?
I think if you compare me from last season to now you can see the evolution already I’ve already contributed more goals and I’d like to keep that going and hopefully become a key player for the team.
Where do you see yourself in 3–5 years as a footballer? What are your long-term goals?
Hoping for a long career in football with my long term goals to see how far I can take it, like everyone I’d love to make it to the WSL but I don’t put pressure on myself.
