INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
My name is Hakeem Sandah and I am a follower of Christ. I currently play for Farnborough FC and have aspirations of playing in the Champions League.
How would you describe yourself as a right winger/attacking player?
As a player I’d say I’m someone who likes to play with a lot of flair to take my man on 1v1 and to create chances to either score or assist.
You spent important developmental years at Tottenham Hotspur FC and later Huddersfield Town FC, what are your strongest memories from those academies?
From my time at Tottenham my strongest memories would be being able to experience playing different European teams during international tournaments. At Huddersfield, my strongest memories would be moving away from home for the first time and being able to share that experience with teammates I can now call brothers.
What do you remember most about your first training sessions or matches with Tottenham Hotspur FC? Was it intimidating, exciting, or something else?
After leaving Chelsea, I felt like I had a point to prove and going into Tottenham felt like the fresh start I needed which was very exciting.
What was your first real experience of senior football like compared to academy football?
Senior football felt more real as there was really something to play for. Also playing in front of fans who care deeply about the team gave me an extra boost to help give more to the team. Academy football felt more tactical whereas senior football was a lot more reliant on moments.
After leaving Huddersfield, you had a period without a club, how difficult was that mentally?
This period was most definitely one of the hardest of my career so far. At times it was difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel but, my faith in God helped me remember what I am capable of and trust in his timing. This period changed me for the better and had helped me feel unshakeable mentally.
Signing for Colchester United FC in 2024 must have been an exciting new chapter. Can you tell us about your time there ?
My time at Colchester was a great blessing. Making my debut and being around a first team environment made a big impact on my development which I’m forever grateful for.
What were your first impressions when you joined the club? And how important was it to get back into a professional setup after your time without a club?
When I first joined the club I understood the opportunity to be in a professional environment and what was needed to progress there. It was a relief to finally be given an opportunity to showcase what I’m capable of as that is all I’ve needed.
How valuable were your loan spells at Maldon & Tiptree FC & Walton & Hersham FC in helping you adapt to senior football?
I value my loans spells greatly because it taught me different sides of the game that academy football cannot. It helped me learn how to use my body better as I was playing against opponents who were much more physical than what I was used to.
You joined Farnborough FC after a successful trial, what made the move feel right for you?
Seeing Farnborough had a mix of experienced players and young upcoming players was a good sign for me. Also, having a team at this level appreciate my game made the decision a lot easier.
