My names Aedan Gilfedder, I’m 18 years old and play for Dumbarton.
What would you say are the strongest parts of your game as a midfielder?
I would say my direct pace and power as a winger and my physical attributes definitely help, always looking to be positive and make something happen.
Which youth clubs did you play for before joining Dumbarton? And what are your strongest memories from grassroots football?
Started off at Glenvale, bit of a late bloomer before going to port Glasgow really enjoyed my time at both clubs and when I was 14 signed for Livingston where I really got going. Had a great 2 years at Livingston but then had the opportunity to come a bit closer to home and join Morton where I could do day release and train in the mornings.
I was also lucky enough at this time to represent Scottish schools u18s and got an international cap out of it testing my self against international players.
How did the move to Dumbarton come about? What attracted you to the club?
A year before had played against Dumbarton for Livingston in pre-season and scored a hatrick and lucky enough caught the eye of Gordon Scanlan the head of youth at the time and he kept in touch and when it was time to move on from Morton u18s and find a pathway into first team football Gordon made it clear that would be at Dumbarton for me.
Can you remember your first day at the club? What was your first impression of the dressing room and coaching staff?
I think like anyone moving teams at first your in your shell a bit kidding on your shy but it helps when staff and players are brand new and make you feel welcome so didt take long to settle in.
What’s the best thing about being part of the Dumbarton first-team squad?
For me personally my ambitions are to be a full time footballer and having spent the last 18 months in an environment full of pros who have done it all, boys in the dressing room who have played in the Scottish Premier League and spent time down south it’s great to look up to, so to learn from boys who I have so much respect for what they’ve achieved and to learn off them on and off the pitch is priceless.
Describe your emotions when you found out you would make your first-team debut.
I had been on the bench since the January and had been training really well, I felt I was ready and deserved it and senior boys in the dressing room were telling me the same so every week I was sat on the bench counting the subs and stoppages praying it was me who got the shout to come on and thankfully eventually I did against Queen Of The South in march. I remember Aron Lynas who was amazing with me while he was here, telling me to hurry up and get stripped after the manager gave me the shout and I remember being stood on the halfway line waiting for the ball to go out staring onto the stand under the rock with my leg literally shaking and I’m never usually one to get nervous.
What was it like making your first appearances in league football?
It was a great feeling and one i’l never forget, was a 0-0 draw so not the most entertaining but came on and done well and remember getting absolutely taken out on the half way line on the counterattack. Getting in the dressing room after and all the boys congratulating you and all the staff was an amazing feeling.
How important has the support from fans been?
Dumbarton have a great fan base even the numbers you seen make the travel for the 20s final in may tells you what you need to know and you can always hear them at the rock.
What goals have you set yourself for the next season?
I have been more than grateful for the opportunities I have had so far and I look at my first season at the club I made my debut, last season I got my first start and more appearances under my belt so this season I really want to get my name out there and show what I can really do. I know I’m a bit raw but I’m eager to learn and do what it takes on and off the pitch to achieve my goals.
