Introduce yourself…
I’m Josh Sommerton, Salisbury FC defender, where I’ve currently been for about 7 seasons now. Follow and play many sports and am just a general fitness fanatic.
What are your specific qualities as a defender?
Think my main qualities as a defender now are my physical attributes and reading of danger. I enjoy a good battle with an opposition player and like imposing my presence in defensive situations. Growing up as a winger it probably took a little while to develop a solid defensive understanding but enjoy the times I can get forwards.
How important is football for you?
Yeah footballs huge, obviously it was always football mad growing up and being around such a competitive environment for so long I feel has shaped my ambitions and how I am as a person for sure. Also met so many great people on the journey which is an added benefit. Now it’s definitely also something that is used as a release after a week of work for example.
What’s one thing you think fans would be surprised to learn about you off the pitch?
Wow tough one this. Not sure maybe the fact that I used to be a physiologist. I can accurately identify 30 different ecg traces and name the heart conditions associated. Suppose it might not be often associated with a big combative defender.
Joshua, you made your debut for Salisbury FC in the 2017-2018 season at the age of 17. How did you experience that moment?
Yeah, my debut was an interesting one like it probably was for most. Going into it was of course nervous, but once it got going I was buzzing to be out there felt like the game was over in a flash. But after the game I felt a sense of pride and it gave me a solid platform to build on.
This season you’re one of the first names on the team sheet. What’s your pre-game ritual or superstition?
Pre game prep is now always the same. Don’t really have any superstitions or anything like that, just make sure that the minute before we go out I have a quick pre workout drink just to give me that added caffeine boost and get me hyped for the game.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from a coach or teammate?
Best piece of advice I’ve received, really simple one that I heard a lot while breaking in just to focus on what you can control. This was particularly valuable when I was first breaking in, simply just reminding me to play my own game and not be influenced by other external factors that could affect my game. Especially when there was the pressures from the crowd and what not.

Joshua, what’s your favorite off-field activity to unwind after a tough match or week?
Outside of football, my favourite activity, I know it sounds busy but I do enjoy a gym session or might be hoping on and gaming with a few mates. Few sessions on call of duty is always a good laugh. Stuff like that just helps to take my mind off things especially if it’s been a bit of a long week or not a result I’ve wanted at football.
Last season, you were promoted with Salisbury Fc. What’s your ambition for this season?
Yeah, great season last year. This year I’m hoping for similar really. Want to play as many games as I can avoiding injury on a personal level, but aiming to make playoffs with the group again this season. Not the points return we’ve wanted so far but we’re playing some great stuff and have been very unlucky in big moments so confident that we’ll begin to climb the table by the end of the season.
What’s your ultimate dream?
Ultimate dream I suppose is just be successful as possible whether that be through work or football. Of course the dream for anyone playing football growing up is to play league football so for sure would say that’s the one.
