INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself…
I’m Owen. I’ve been at Colchester United for 6 years and just finished my scholarship. Was not offered a pro contract so now looking at keeping fit and improving myself in off season to be ready for pre season and trials.
Can you describe your playing style and what makes you a unique striker?
I’m a very direct winger and am confident off of both feet. And enjoy playing off both sides. I like going 1v1 and getting crosses and shots off, and have a good end product.
Can you take us back to the moment you first joined Colchester United FC, how did that move come about?
I was playing Sunday league as an u13 in the season where covid came about actually playing for concord, alongside West Ham foundation. I got seen playing for Essex and concord and offered a trial which was successful.
Who were the key people that helped you get to Colchester: coaches, family, or mentors and what role did they play in your journey?
My dad was the biggest key to getting to Colchester, he had been a big supporter of me and would always push me to be the best version of me.
Was there anything that surprised you when you stepped into a professional setup?
To be honest there wasn’t anything massively surprising for me. The big bits were differences in facilities and how you were treated as players and the standard of the pitches.
How did your loan spell at Concord Rangers come together, and what was your first reaction when you heard the news?
My loan spell came about because of the links I had before I went to Colchester.
How different was the experience at Concord Rangers FC compared to academy football at Colchester?
Incredibly different type of football poor standard of actual football and pitches that I wasn’t used to by any means. There wasn’t much pretty football here just all physical and Ariel.
Is there a specific moment or game from your loan that really helped you grow as a player?
I’d say for me was playing on the Astro turf pitch where I finally got a flat surface and was able to play to my strengths and get my first goal lifted my confidence.
If you could give one piece of advice to young players going out on loan for the first time, what would it be?
If I was to give any type of advice it would be to be ready for a different type of football and be open minded coming into it. Don’t expect to be better than everyone else just because you’re at an academy.
What are your goals now for the next stage of your career?
My goals is to get back into professional football and get myself resigned for an academy.
