Introduce yourself…

Hello, I’m Ieuan Owen. Currently playing for Barry Town United in the Welsh Premier League.

How would you describe yourself as a player, and what are your strongest qualities as a striker?

As a player, my strongest qualities are running in behind and running 1 v 1 against defenders. Id describe myself as someone direct, who enjoys running in behind and also running with the ball.


When you’re one-on-one or through on goal, which factors guide your decision to shoot, pass, or drive?

When I’m one-on-one, it all depends on the defenders positioning. If he’s showing me one way, and I back myself then I’m likely to take him on. When I’m through on goal, it depends on the goalkeepers positioning, and if it’s easier for me to place it, lift it, or go around him.

Is there a teammate, coach, or player whose feedback has shaped your career so far?

In the last year, the player who has helped me was Kayne Mclaggon. With his experience it was ideal for me to learn off him.

Ieuan, you spent key years at Penybont FC youth. What did that environment teach you about the game and about yourself as a player?

Taught me, as a player to enjoy the games and to never take anything for granted and to always train like it’s your last session.

Was there a particular coach at Penybont FC who pushed or believed in you early on?

To be honest, at Penybont, my coach we had for the 2 years I was there stayed the same. However, I got rejected before I even made it into the academy. It just goes to show, if you keep working hard you can achieve it.

You scored 15 goals in 25 games for Afan Lido, earning your move to Barry. What key changes in your training or mindset made that step up possible?

For me, the difference between Cymru South and the Welsh Premier is the speed of the game. So with my training, I had to work 2x as hard in order to come close to the players currently in the league. My mindset was, and still is, I’m here for a reason so believe there’s a reason why I’m here.

At Barry you’ve played both as a starter and substitute, scoring 8 goals so far. How do you approach the game differently in each role?

As a substitute, I tend to watch the defenders id be up against to know what they do in certain situations and how I could capitalise. As a starter, I knew I had to take my chance. And the last 6 games of the season, proved I can do it in this league.

What are your targets this season, both personally (goals, minutes) and for the team in the Cymru Premier?

My personal targets this season are to finish with 10+ goals. Finishing on 8 with the minutes I had last year, I’m confident I can reach that target. As a team, we want to finish as high as possible, as a group we don’t see why we can’t compete higher up in the league.

Do you aspire to play at higher levels—perhaps within the Welsh national setup or in leagues abroad?

Yes of course, every player aspires to play higher. I’m still young enough to play at a high level so why not.
